Trip to Atlanta

We were in Atlanta for a few days for my brother-in-law's wedding. The wedding was beautiful and the weather actually cooperated for this outdoor, Atlanta wedding in August. It was cooler than it had been the two previous days, dry, and sunny. It really couldn't have been better.

The color scheme of the wedding was very pretty--ivory, pale green, and peach. Their wedding cake was beautiful.
A little less elegant, but equally as impressive, was the groom's cake. The groom was the drum major in the Georgia Tech Band so his cake was inspired by his uniform.
Besides the wedding, one of the highlights of the trip was walking past Alton Brown's house. I won't reveal my source or the location of his house, but here I am out front.Do you see him in the window? Nah, me neither. Though you better believe I was looking. And looking. And looking.

Kids & Cupcakes

Is there anything cuter than kids with cupcakes? My friend sent me photos of her kids enjoying the lion and bear cupcakes from last week. So sweet!

Julie & Julia

My friend Kristin and I went to see Julie & Julia today. Have you heard of it? Kidding. I absolutely loved it! It is such a sweet movie. I had tears in my eyes almost from the beginning. And I think Kristin did, too. Unless she has a cold or is suffering from allergies.

Although I never really sat down and watched her show and I'm not at all familiar with Mastering the Art of French Cooking, I enjoyed finding out that Julia Child was such a sweetheart. It seems like no matter the situation, she was always herself. Her quirks were so endearing and so charming, and I fell in love. I want to know all about her now.

My friend Jennifer saw Julie & Julia last night. On our walk this morning, she told me that when the movie was over she went straight to the book store and bought Mastering the Art of French Cooking. I laughed. Except now I get it. I want that book, too. Kristin's planning to go out and buy it as well. I just want to try to make something that Julia Child made. And I really want to make those faces they make in the movie when they taste the boeuf bourguignon and the chocolate & almond cake with chocolate frosting.

Okay. All better now.

Thank you, Carie and Laura, for helping me through my computer crisis. I never knew blog backgrounds could expire. I guess when something is free, you really can't get too upset if they take it away.

Argh!

Someone please tell me what's up with my blog background and how I can fix it. Or do you all see it the normal way?

You Never Know

A child should never have to miss a playgroup because Mommy forgot to make something or didn't have time to stop at the grocery store. What I was afraid might come off as cheap and lazy was actually perceived as cute and creative.*

*And the creative person wasn't me. I saw it done a few years ago, though I can't remember where.

Flip Flops Cake

This cake was for a friend of a friend. She emailed me and said the flip flops (in orange and pink) would be perfect for a bridal shower she was throwing this weekend. Now, I wasn't sure if this was going to be the bridal shower cake, but I treated it as such. And that was the cause of my stress. And so much of it!

Things were going wrong all over the place, and I felt like a failing competitor on Cake Challenge. Thankfully, there were no cameras capturing the action or microphones recording the inevitable foul language. I nearly called the 'customer' last night to tell her that she might want to place an order at her local grocery store bakery because things were not looking good. I'm talking cake crumbs everywhere. Cakes crumbling. Worried about running out of icing. Running out of icing. Thawing frozen icing and turning green into orange! It was exciting, to be sure, but not in a good way for me. I don't handle pressure well.

Even though it was touch and go for a while last night, the whole thing finally came together in the end. It's probably not my best work, but I learned a lot of valuable lessons and that was the idea in the first place.
